What is Career Coaching?

Career coaching helps people be successful and feel fulfilled in their work, and have their personal and professional lives feel aligned. This will look different for different people. For some, this means:

  • working where they make an impact or help others
  • enjoying their work environment, co-workers or other colleagues
  • pursuing a specific talent or cause
  • finding ways to combine multiple interests
  • balancing work and personal interests/ responsibilities.

Career coaching is about finding, modifying or creating a work life that:

  • Feels like a fit,
  • Energizes rather than depletes you, and that
  • You look forward to doing.

Who Works With A Career Coach?

There is no typical career coaching client! I work with:

  • Men and women at all stages of their professional lives
  • Those currently employed or between jobs, out of the workforce or in school
  • Those who work in corporations, non-profits, small businesses or as solo contractors or entrepreneurs
  • Clients ranging from highly established to starting out to starting over
  • People who have reached the peak of their professions and others who haven’t yet reached where they’d like to be.

They do, however, share some similar, surprising traits. Many:

  • Have multiple interests.
  • Are highly artistic or musical (A few are professional musicians or artists, but many perform or teach on the side in addition to their “day job.”)
  • Were born in countries other than the U.S. and English is not their first language.
  • Have traveled or lived overseas.
  • Are highly motivated – they don’t need me to “crack the whip.”
  • Are willing to be introspective and even vulnerable as they explore what’s currently not working for them.
  • Are left-handed! (About 1 out of 10 people are left-handed, but about 1 out of 5 of my clients are left-handed. Perhaps it is because their brains work differently and they tend to be creative, which means they may have more challenges adapting to traditional work roles. Just a theory!)
  • Have experienced at least some success in some area of their life – either professionally or personally.
  • Are excited by personal insights.
  • Have a sense of humor.
  • Find that their confidence is not as high as it once was.
  • Understand that deep, lasting change takes time, effort and courage – and they are up to the task.

What does Freda offer as a Career Coach that goes beyond what a Life Coach would do?

Like most life coaches, Freda will help you:

  • Articulate the elements that are important for you in your work
  • Tap into your own voice to find what you want, separate from what others think would be right for you
  • See new possibilities
  • Quell the self-doubt that may hold you back and keep you at the status quo.

As a career coach, Freda also brings resources and strategies honed from successfully working with hundreds of career coaching clients. She can help you:

  • Turn personal interests and strengths into tangible work opportunities
  • Deal with specific challenges – such as gaps in work history, conflicts with colleagues, being bypassed for a promotion
  • Move forward with confidence as you take on new roles or assume more responsibilities (onboarding)
  • Explore a career path that feels right for you, even if it’s not the traditional or expected route (eg, preferring one’s current role to taking a promotion)
  • Create ways to transfer skills from one type of work to another
  • Learn more about yourself through personality and career assessments (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Strong Interest Inventory)
  • Craft a dynamic resume that gets noticed
  • Develop a LinkedIn profile
  • Network – especially for those who dread networking!
  • Get unstuck – by keeping the career exploration and job search process moving forward.

What results do career coaching clients get when they work with Freda?

The outcomes differ. Some people:

  • Change careers completely
  • Find similar work in a new organization, or
  • Figure out ways to re-engage in their current role.

Regardless, clients reap the following from working with Freda:

  • Clarity
  • A sense of direction
  • A plan of action
  • Seeing new possibilities
  • Hope
  • A renewed sense of confidence and well-being.

What Career Coaching Clients Say About Working With Freda

“I met with my new department manager and we spent most of that time talking about my career path. She was encouraging and supportive of me trying new things and I’m considering a job swap to see if a different position would be a good fit for me. I have Freda to thank because I rarely give myself permission to be open about the things I want in life or in my career.”

Male, in his 30s, Switched from tech support to marketing for a non-profit

“I came to Freda because of issues I’ve struggled with for years. This is a forum to sit down with a professional and verbalize it all, to take concrete steps toward fixing them. That was huge.”

Male, in his 50s, Wanting to leave current role in IT and exploring whether to find work in a new area

“Years ago when I knew my company was downsizing, I felt afraid – and like a victim. If I got laid off, how would I ever find anything else? I thought all I could do was this one tiny aspect of the business. Thanks to Freda, I’m in a much better position now. What I have isn’t a list of jobs. Rather, it’s job qualities I can look for. This helps me know how to market myself, too. I feel like I’m in control, and I like that!”

Female, in her 50s, Decided to stay in her current role in the Insurance industry

“Thank you for your advice and feedback in preparing for my performance review. It went very well and was more of an open discussion and I was able to communicate the key points you and I talked about.”
